How
to find the best flashlight for you
This
independent guide was created to help you understand
the basics of flashlights and to help you choose the
right flashlight for you. We do not sell any flashlights
ourselves, so you can be confident that all of the information
in this guide is independent and unbiased.
Background
on flashlights
Flashlights are great products that help us see in environments
where otherwise we would be fumbling in the dark. People
use flashlights at work, at home, and at play; flashlights
are used by law enforcement, outdoorsmen, and as emergency
backup; the simple flashlight is one of the most useful
products around. Flashlights are designed for one function-
to provide light- and are basically simple and inexpensive
products without a wide range of differences among brands
and models. But, there are a few important features
and functions to consider when finding the flashlight
that's right for you, especially if you have not purchased
a flashlight for a few years.
Developments
in lighting and electronics technology over the last
few years have led to the widespread availability and
use of LEDs (light emitting diodes) as the light source
for flashlights and other lighting equipment. Before
to LEDs (and probably the case for most flashlights
currently in your drawer or closet) flashlights used
bulbs as the light source. Bulbs are relatively fragile,
give off a relatively high amount of heat, and have
a relatively short life. In contrast, LEDs are generally
tiny light bulbs that fit into an electrical circuit
and are illuminated solely by the movement of electrons
in a semiconductor material. However, unlike ordinary
flashlight bulbs, they are quite durable, they don't
generate a significant amount of heat, and because there
is no filament to burn out, they typically last for
thousand of hours.
Features
and functions of flashlights
Searching for a flashlight online is a great way to
research and compare several types, models and brands
of flashlights to make sure you find what that will
work for you. Internet shopping can also be a lot more
efficient than driving across and around town in person,
especially if there is no store that sells flashlights
close to you. Not only do online flashlight stores have
a much larger selection than most retail stores that
sell flashlights, but shopping online for flashlights
is also more convenient because it can be done 24 hours
a day.
To
a large degree, the choice of flashlight you want or
need will depend on how you intend to use the flashlight.
Besides from whether or not you want to get a flashlight
with a traditional bulb or with LEDs, there are a few
other features to consider when finding the right flashlight
for you:
